What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind. Everyone enters hypnoidal states every day without even realising; daydreaming, being engrossed in a book or focussed on the road. Every day we experience hypnoidal states which psychologists call “waking hypnosis” when our attention is heightened and focussed. During hypnotherapy you will be guided to enter a natural hypnotic state.

What happens in hypnotherapy?

In the state of hypnosis, when the unconscious mind is more active and accessible, the hypnotherapist's aim is to help the client resolve any issues which have become problematic. Through relaxation, guided imagery, positive hypnotic suggestion and other methods, unwanted beliefs or behaviours can be reprogrammed into more positive ones.

What issues can hypnotherapy help me with?

Some of the most common reasons clients come for hypnotherapy are listed here -

  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Smoking cessation
  • Healthy eating
  • Confidence boosting
  • Relaxation
  • Menopause related issues
  • Stress management
  • Improving sleep

There are many others!

Can I be hypnotised?

Everyone can be hypnotised, if they want to be. A good, personal rapport between therapist and client is crucial in ensuring a trusting and open, non-judging therapeutic relationship is established.

Will I be made to do things I do not want to do?

This is a common concern; in hypnosis, you cannot be compelled to do anything you consider morally wrong or repugnant. During hypnosis, the individual remains free to exercise their free will, accepting or rejecting the suggestions made by the therapist, at no time are they under the control of the therapist.

Will I ‘cluck like a chicken’?

No, hypnotherapy is totally different from stage hypnosis which is undertaken for entertainment. The key to stage hypnosis is that the participants have volunteered to be on stage and have the expectation that they will do something outrageous under the influence of the hypnotist.

Will I get stuck in hypnosis?

No, whilst you will be deeply relaxed, you are still awake and able to get up and walk away at any time if needed.

Can I talk in hypnosis?

Yes, if you want to. You cannot be compelled to reveal your inner most thoughts and secrets, unless you want to, despite being deeply relaxed, you remain in control throughout.
